In these days we hear many wrong opinions and fear about liposuction. Our patients ask many questions and they even ask if there is the risk of death or the possibility of big holes that occurs after liposuction.
We, as plastic surgeons, combine art and science together in plastic surgery.
We do not forget that health and aesthetic can not be seperated from each other in our operations.
Liposuction was also used in the past. Liposuction is to take excessive fat tissue in regions where aesthetic look
is lost. Fat tissue is taken with the aid of long and thin cannules.
Using the surgeon’s own power, The fat tissue is taken by electric aspirator or by large injectors I prefer
liposuction with the aid of injection. In this method the surgeon implement liposuction in a more controlled way
and we do not have to be controlled by the machines.
The patients are curious about the questions below:
1- What is the aim of liposuction?
Numbers do not change in the body after puberty, but only fat cells are absorbed Therefore, it is impossible
to occur a certain number of fat cells in the region that was previously taken.Perhaps the most important thing
to focus on is that liposuct,on is not a weight loss method, on the contrary it is body contouring surgery.
2- Who is the ideal patient for liposuction?
The ones who do not think that they are fat and the ones who complain about certain areas of their body
such as hips; waist circumference; side waist regions; iner side of thigh areas.
3- What is the necessity of diet before the operation?
Before the operation period I follow some of my patients with an appropriate diet. I noticed that successful
results are obtained in liposuction if the diet is done successfully and this diet should also be followed after the
operation as well. However, in patients with persistent diet, I apply liposuction for certain body parts which has
an indication without waiting.
4- What are the things that should be considered before surgery?
You will be re-examined 1 day before the surgery and the regions are marked for the liposcution to be applied.
you should take your surgeon’s suggestions into great account and trust him.
We, plastic surgeons, do these surgeries by using not only scientific but also artistic way of our personality.
Blood thinners of aspirin-like drugs need to be cut before 10 days at least.
Cigarette smoking should be given up 2 weeks before the surgery. When necessary, you can do sports or go on a
diet before the operation but that should be under the control of your surgeon
5- What is the limit of the fat amount that should be taken ?
Safety limit for the fat amount is designated as 2.5- 3 liters however this amount may be increased with proper
preparation before the surgery. If high amounts of fat needs to be taken then the operation can be repeated in 6
months of operation with the interval sessions.
6- What is the most appropriate method of anesthesia and surgery?
I prefer the sedation anesthesia and this form of anesthesia is added to the local anesthesia. Besides, I prefer
general anesthesia when an additional procedure needs to be applied. As surgical techniques in recent years, I use
‘tumesan’ technique and it is the most commonly used method in recent years. In addition, I appliy superficial
liposuction with thin cannules and that application minimizes the skin disorder risk.
7- Will I have any pain and when will I be able to return to social life?
The speacial fluid for subcutaneous fatty tissue makes the application painless and it reduces the amount of
blood in the process of fat absorbing. In the post operative period, dressing is done in the cannulated entrance
holes and the patient can easily have a bath after that application. Return to active social and business life is
between 3 or 5 days.
8- What will happen after the operation?
It is normal to have a slightly bruise on the skin and within a short of time that bruise disappears. Throughout
2 or 4 weeks I apply corset for the region of liposuction According to the traditional approach, I believe it is
unnecessary to apply the long duration of the corset. In the post operative period, I recommend manual massage
of LPG to my patients because that makes them to a more aesthetic skin surface.
9- What is the effect of Liposuction? Is it possible to have a sagging in the skin?
In liposuction, the skin is not completely seperated from the subcutaneous skin, on the contrary, blood vessels
and nerves are protected. However, after the liposuction, the use of post operative corset is required and the
elasticity of the skin should be suitable for the subcutaneous tissue of the skin for proper adaptation. In addition,
with the use of superficial liposuction in recent years, the deformities in the skin are prevented. Superficial
liposuction is done with thin cannules. After that application, a desired contour is achieved and this contour is
well adapted to the skin.
10- For which region does liposuction give more ideal results?
Liposuction is suitable for abdomen; side waist area and the basins; abdominal region; the inner side of thigh
and knee; ankles; back and our neck. The application for jowl area is not really known and liposuction gives very
successful results for that jowl area as well.
